How to Get a H1 in Leaving Cert Higher Maths
A H1 in Higher Maths is 90%, or 540 of 600 marks. The real paper structure, the marking scheme's partial credit, and the 25 bonus points.
A H1 in Leaving Cert Higher Maths is 90%, the threshold used in every Leaving Cert subject. Maths is examined over two papers worth 300 marks each, so a H1 is 540 of those 600 marks. The State Examinations Commission hands those marks out in small pieces, and the way it does that is what the rest of this post is grounded in.
The exam you will sit
Two official processes could change the maths papers, and neither one changes them yet.
The first is Senior Cycle Redevelopment, the programme rewriting every Leaving Cert subject specification. Subjects are rewritten in groups called tranches, each group reaching schools in a different September. Maths is in Tranche 3. The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) lists it there in its schedule of subjects for redevelopment, with Agricultural Science, Computer Science, Design and Communication Graphics, History, Home Economics, Music, and Physics and Chemistry.
The NCCA's announcement of that tranche, dated Wednesday 22 October 2025, says those subjects "will be introduced to the curriculum for all schools in September 2027". That is a date for teaching a new course, not for examining one, and no first-examination year for maths has been published. The maths development page puts the work at stage 5 of the NCCA's 11-stage process, which is the consultation report on the background paper. No draft specification exists yet. The course you are on is still the 2015 syllabus.
The second process is the assessment adjustments, the extra choice added to exam papers from 2021 onwards and kept since. The Minister for Education confirmed on Wednesday 5 November 2025 that they continue. From the gov.ie press release:
I am happy to confirm today that these adjustments will stay in place until they are washed out by the revised specifications and examination formats on the way under Senior Cycle Redevelopment. This means that Leaving Certificate 2027 students will benefit from assessment adjustments in Irish, English and Maths as well as 29 other subjects.
The Department of Education's information note for schools says the adjustments apply in 2027 to every subject except those in Tranche 1, the first group of redeveloped subjects. Maths is in Tranche 3, so the adjusted papers described below are what 2027 candidates sit, and what later candidates sit until the new specification reaches the exam hall.
380 marks printed, 300 of them answered
Each paper runs 2 hours 30 minutes for 300 marks. Page 3 of Higher Level Paper 1 from 2025 sets out the layout:
Section A Concepts and Skills 150 marks 6 questions Section B Contexts and Applications 150 marks 4 questions
Answer questions as follows: • any five questions from Section A – Concepts and Skills • any three questions from Section B – Contexts and Applications.
Six 30-mark questions and four 50-mark questions come to 380 marks printed on the paper. Each section prints one more question than you have to answer, so 300 marks is what any candidate can earn. Paper 2 in 2025 is laid out the same way, as are Paper 1 and Paper 2 in 2026.
That extra question is the adjustment. Page 51 of the Department of Education's Assessment Arrangements for 2026 prints the unadjusted arrangement beside the current one. Unadjusted, Section A is six 25-mark questions with no choice, and Section B has no choice either. Of the adjusted Section A, the same page says its questions "will be similar in content and length to those that the candidates will be familiar with from previous years, but they will be required to attempt one less question". Of Section B it says the material in each question "will be reduced somewhat from what might be typically expected in a 50-mark question at this level".
Page 3 of that 2025 paper also states two ways to lose marks:
You will lose marks if your solutions do not include relevant supporting work.
You may lose marks if the appropriate units of measurement are not included, where relevant.
The first says "will". The second says "may".
The marks come in small pieces
Each question on a maths paper is split into parts that are marked separately, and the marking scheme calls each of these a unit of marking. The 2025 Higher Level scheme breaks Paper 1 into 42 units across its ten questions, and Paper 2 into 43 across its ten. On Paper 1 every Section A question is three units and every Section B question is six.
Each unit is marked on a named scale. The name gives the marks available and a letter for how many categories the scale sorts your work into, from two up to five. A 10D unit is worth 10 marks on the five-category scale, and the only marks it can award are 0, 2, 4, 6 and 10. What matters for a H1 is what the first category above zero is worth. Adding the lowest non-zero mark on every unit of a question gives a figure for a script that reaches that first category everywhere and goes no further. For the ten questions on 2025 Paper 1 those figures are:

This is not a mark you can plan on, because the scheme still has to see work of merit on each unit before it awards anything. What it shows is the size of the first rung. Work that reaches it on every part of a question was worth 8 to 16 marks on that paper, and a question left blank was worth none.
One rule on page 5 of the 2025 scheme is worth more on this paper than on most:
In general, accept a candidate's work in one part of a question for use in subsequent parts of the question, unless this oversimplifies the work involved.
A Section B question is six units long. Where parts (b) to (f) depend on a value you got wrong in part (a), that rule lets the later parts be marked on their own merits, so long as using the wrong value does not make them easier.
Section B arrives with topics mixed together
The exam corpus behind this site holds every question from the past papers we have extracted, tagged with the topic areas it covers. There are 12 areas for maths, and the corpus currently holds ten Higher Level papers set under the adjusted structure, from 2021 to 2025.
Across those ten papers, the 40 Section B questions cover 2.42 of the 12 areas each on average, and 35 of the 40 cover two or more. The 60 Section A questions average 1.58 areas, and 33 of the 60 cover two or more.
The 2025 papers show what that looks like. Paper 1 Question 8 combines financial maths with an optimisation problem, so it is tagged as calculus and geometry as well. Question 10 runs from a pattern in a sequence to induction to a limit, and ends in coordinate geometry. Paper 2 Question 10 puts the normal distribution, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing in one 50-mark question.

The clock and the choice
The 2026 timetable gave each maths paper 150 minutes for its 300 marks. Session times are published fresh each year, so take yours off the timetable for the year you are sitting. Our post on exam time management works out what that rate makes each question worth in minutes.
The choice is a cost inside that time. Reading four Section B questions properly before you commit to three of them takes minutes, and the mark allocations leave none spare. Deciding which topics you would drop before you walk in is the part of that decision you can make in advance.
Is Higher Level maths worth it
Higher Level Maths carries 25 bonus points at H6 and above. The Central Applications Office (CAO), which converts your grades into points for college entry, states it in its worked examples:
25 bonus points will be awarded for Higher Level Mathematics for H6 grades and above… For example, if an applicant receives a H6 grade an additional 25 points will be added to the 46 points already awarded for a H6 grade i.e. Higher Level Mathematics now carries a points score of 71 for this applicant. The six highest scores in a single sitting of the examination are then added to give an applicant's total points score.
A H1 in Higher maths is 100 points plus the 25, which comes to 125. The bonus is added to maths before your best six subjects are picked, so it reaches your total only when maths stays inside that six with the 25 already on it. The grade bands themselves are identical across subjects, as our post on Leaving Cert grades sets out. The 25 points change what a maths grade is worth to the CAO, and they change nothing about what earns it in the exam hall.
Working from the papers
Every Higher Level paper back to 2007 and its marking scheme is free from the SEC, and the Leaving Cert maths past papers page puts each paper beside its scheme. The 2025 papers are the most recent with a published scheme.
When you mark your own attempt, give yourself a mark on each unit of the question. A single total of 32 out of 50 does not say which of the six units it came from, and the six are what you would work on next.
Sit a whole paper inside the real session time at least once. Working through questions one at a time leaves out the choice and the pace, and both of those are part of the paper.

The Department confirmed in November 2025 that assessment adjustments continue in 2027 for every subject outside Tranche 1 of Senior Cycle Redevelopment, and maths is in Tranche 3. A revised maths specification is envisaged for schools from September 2027, and no first-examination year for it has been published.
How many bonus points is Higher Level maths worth? 25, at H6 and above. They are added to your maths score before your best six subjects are selected.
Is a H6 in Higher maths better than an O1 in Ordinary? On points, a H6 with the bonus comes to 71 and an O1, the top Ordinary Level grade, is 56. Whether that difference reaches your total depends on your other five subjects.
Should I attempt a question I cannot finish? Yes. The scheme awards credit unit by unit, and on 2025 Paper 1 first-rung work across every unit of a question added up to between 8 and 16 marks. A blank scores nothing.
Do I get marks for the right answer with no work shown? Usually less than for the same answer with the work under it. The 2025 paper states you will lose marks if your solutions do not include relevant supporting work, and the scheme generally awards an unsupported answer the lowest level of credit above zero.
